(06-09-23) MOGADISHU — Former President and current Member of Parliament Sharif Sheikh Ahmed welcomed the Norwegian Special Envoy for Somalia, Heidi Johansen, and the Norwegian Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires in Somalia, Carsten Carlsen, to his office in Mogadishu on Wednesday.
In a tweet following the meeting, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed stated, “It is my pleasure to receive in my office the special representative of Norway for Somalia, Mrs. Heidi Johansen, and Mr. Carsten Carlsen. We discussed the peace process in the Burka Dirimeed area and how important it is to find lasting peace for our brothers and sisters in the common area and pastures.”
The meeting focused on fostering peace initiatives in the volatile Burka Dirimeed region, a topic that has seen Sharif Sheikh Ahmed actively involved in mediation efforts. The discussions also extended to the current situation in Lasaanood and the ongoing reconciliation between Somaliland and the SSC-Khatumo State.
This development comes at a crucial time when Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has been seen increasingly taking on a mediator’s role in diffusing tensions between communities in Middle Shabelle and Hiraan regions.
Heidi Johansen’s visit underlines Norway’s continued interest in supporting peace and stability in Somalia. The Scandinavian nation has been a key international player in the efforts to bring long-lasting peace to the country, often providing humanitarian aid and supporting governance projects.
