(07-09-23) MOGADISHU — The Somali Cabinet, led by acting Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, approved several significant agreements with Ethiopia and Turkey on Thursday, covering trade, defence cooperation, and higher education.
These newly ratified pacts aim to elevate Somalia’s standing in the region and strengthen its domestic security apparatus. They also come as the government is intensifying its efforts to quash the militant group Al-Shabaab.
The agreements outline a multi-faceted approach to cooperation. Trade discussions pave the way for greater market access for Somali goods and services in both Ethiopia and Turkey, potentially boosting the Somali economy.
The cabinet also endorsed a proposal from the Ministry of Finance to establish a Joint Ministerial Committee for the awarding of government contracts. The move is expected to enhance transparency and efficiency in public procurement processes.
During the meeting, the Ministers of Defence and Internal Security briefed the cabinet on the latest military operations against Al-Shabaab and other threats to national security. The reports highlighted the army’s successes in liberating regions previously held by Al-Shabaab. The cabinet unanimously lauded the achievements of the army in the fight against Al-Shabaab and underscored the importance of a unified approach to eradicating the militant group from Somali soil.
