(10-09-23) MOGADISHU – Somali National Army forces successfully fended off a planned attack by Alshabaab militants on Sunday in Awdheegle district, Lower Shabelle region, according to army officials.
Army higher-ups in Awdheegle told State Media that the counter-operation resulted in the death of many militants. In a hurried retreat, Alshabaab forces abandoned the corpses of over 20 militants at the scene.
In a tweet, the Ministry of Defence praised the army’s resolute action: “Early this morning, the Somali National Army successfully prevented an Alshabaab attack in Awdheegle district, Lower Shabelle. We inflicted heavy losses, with Alshabaab fleeing the scene, leaving over 20 of their fallen.
The Somali government has been ramping up targeted operations against Al-Shabaab militants in the Hirshabelle and Galmudug federal states. President Hassan Sheikh has been conspicuously active, leading operations from the front and working to boost military morale.
