(11-09-23) MOGADISHU – Authorities have confirmed that a lethal mine explosion in the El Garas region of central Somalia’s Galgaduud district took the lives of two local officials on Monday.
MP Mohamed Mohamud, a member of the Galmudug State Parliament, and Abdullahi Ibrahim, a member of the local council in Dhuusa-Mareb, died instantly when a mine detonated beneath their vehicle. Security personnel escorting the officials also sustained injuries and have been transported to a hospital in DhusaMareb for medical treatment.
The explosion occurred as the government forces and local militias announced the recapture of El Garas village from insurgent groups. It is believed that al-Shabaab is behind the mine attack
As Al-Shabaab faces increased ground and air operations from the Somali National Army, local forces, and international partners, the government is gaining ground in both the Galmudug and Hirshabelle states.
