(18-09-23) MOGADISHU — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia on Monday announced key changes in the Somali National Army (SNA) aimed at intensifying military operations against Al-Shabaab in Galmudug and Hirshabelle. Brigadier General Madey Nurey Sheikh has been named Deputy Commander, while Dayah Abdi Abdulle has been promoted to Colonel and will serve as the Commander of Land Forces.
The promotions come amidst a strategic shift to counter ongoing insurgency in south and central Somalia. “The task ahead is arduous, but it is a commitment we must make for the stability and future of our nation,” the President stated. This rapid change in leadership implies a more aggressive approach against Al-Shabaab, replacing Brigadier General Ahmed Adan Ali who was appointed just less than three months ago.
Analysts see these new appointments as indicative of the government’s renewed determination to curb militant activities and restore peace. The move is considered timely, as the troubled regions of Galmudug and Hirshabelle continue to grapple with insurgent threats.
The appointment follows a recent announcement by President Mohamud regarding the arrest of several officers accused of pulling forces back from frontline positions in the Galgadud area, a move that undermined the army’s ongoing campaigns in Galmudug State.
