(09/11/23) MOGADISHU – The Thursday weekly Somali cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre passed key legislation aimed at enhancing the country’s security framework. The Cyber Security Bill and the National Security and Intelligence Agency Regulation, are moves seen as pivotal in bolstering Somalia’s defence against digital threats and intelligence challenges.
Alongside these landmark decisions, the cabinet focused on the acute crisis wrought by the El-Nino-induced rains and floods. A detailed report presented to the ministers highlighted the extent of the devastation across various regions, prompting the government to instruct rescue agencies to intensify their emergency response efforts.
The meeting also served as a platform for the Ministries of Defence and Internal Security to update the cabinet on their latest operations. Key among these were efforts to liberate areas and conduct rescue operations for those affected by the ongoing floods, demonstrating the government’s dual commitment to long-term security enhancement and immediate crisis management.
The approval of the Cyber Security and Intelligence bills represents a significant stride in Somalia’s journey towards a more secure and resilient future. These measures are expected to fortify the nation’s digital infrastructure and intelligence capabilities, crucial in an era of increasing cyber threats.
Furthermore, the government’s swift action in response to the flood crisis, as well as its ongoing security operations, highlight a comprehensive approach to safeguarding the nation against both natural disasters and security threats. This dual focus is key to Somalia’s strategy to ensure the safety and prosperity of its people in these challenging times.
