(15/11/23) LASANOD – The already volatile Sool region is witnessing an intensification of military activities, as Somaliland reportedly increases its presence near Buq-Dharkayn. This development, emerging on Wednesday, marks a significant escalation in tensions between Somaliland forces and the SSC-Khaatumo administration.
Local sources report that Somaliland’s armed forces, collaborating with clan militias, have established positions in Goldheero. This strategic location, perilously close to Buq-Dharkayn, is now a focal point of potential conflict.
In response, SSC forces, entrusted with the security of Buq-Dharkayn, are advancing towards Goldheero mountain. This tactical move signals a readiness to confront the perceived threat, underscoring the growing likelihood of an armed conflict.
The area experienced heavy artillery fire on Tuesday, according to residents and local media reports. While this did not escalate into direct clashes, it serves as a harrowing reminder of the fragility of peace in the region.
The SSC-Khaatumo administration, representing the interests of the Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn regions, has issued a stern warning to Somaliland. Holding their counterparts responsible for any future hostilities, they assert that Somaliland will be accountable for any aggression against their forces or territory.
The tensions were further inflamed last week when SSC-Khatumo forces claimed victory over Somaliland troops in a fierce battle in Buqdharkayn village. The conflict, marked by intense fighting and the use of heavy weaponry, reached a critical point with the capture of Somaliland Army Logistics Commander Ibrahim Tiyoote and 12 fighters, an incident that has significantly heightened the stakes.
