(19-11-23) MOGADISHU — An assembly that could shape the future of Somalia’s democracy, key political figures, government representatives, and civil society leaders convened in Mogadishu today. This significant gathering, following the National Consultative Assembly agreement in May 2023, focused on discussing the electoral process of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
Interior Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, a prominent figure at this assembly, called on the participants to play an active role in shaping the nation’s electoral model. He emphasized that this new model, aimed at enhancing individual representation, is crucial for restoring a sense of power and agency among the Somali people. “Our goal is to create an electoral system where every Somali feels heard and represented,” Minister Fiqi stated.
The meeting is aligned with the government’s ongoing efforts to amend the Constitution, transitioning the nation towards a presidential election system. Amid these significant political shifts, Minister Fiqi underscored the importance of maintaining peace and adhering to the agreed constitutional timelines, especially in the lead-up to the elections.
