(23-11-23) MOGADISHU –The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) this week unveiled two new greenhouses at the National University in Mogadishu, marking a significant advancement in agricultural infrastructure in Somalia, a country where agriculture and livestock breeding form the backbone of the economy.

Ilhami Turus, the TIKA coordinator in Somalia, emphasised the need for support in the agricultural sector at the inauguration ceremony. These greenhouses are part of a broader initiative that includes the supply of agricultural tools, fertilizers, pesticides, and machinery for seeding and harvesting. This is an important development for Somalia, which currently imports about 80% of its fruits and vegetables.

The greenhouses are designed to serve as a model for farmers who typically rely on traditional agricultural methods. They are expected to enhance the professional knowledge and skills of students at the university, offering practical training and experience in agriculture.

TIKA’s project aims to boost local production and ensure the availability of fresh produce for the Somali people. Officials from TIKA revealed that the agency is implementing several projects across various institutions in Somalia, including City University, Mogadishu University, and the Mogadishu Central Prison.

Additionally, TIKA is developing an open market in Balcad, a key agricultural town located 40 kilometres north of the capital. This development is part of TIKA’s broader engagement in Africa, where the agency has completed 1,884 projects between 2017 and 2022, spanning agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fishery, food security, and health.
