(25-11-23) MOGADISHU – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia on Saturday inaugurated the 4th session of the 11th Parliament, delivering a comprehensive address that touched on several key issues affecting the nation.
In his speech, President Mohamud highlighted the recent successes against Al-Shabaab, underscoring the joint efforts of the Federal Forces and regional governments, supported by local populations. This collaboration has resulted in regaining control over extensive territories previously under militant control.
The President also discussed the political agreement of the National Consultative Council in May, stressing the importance of unity and cooperation in the political arena. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the 9th and 10th Parliaments, expressing optimism in the 11th Parliament’s ability to achieve more.
Emphasising the need for humanitarian aid and constitutional reform, President Mohamud called for urgent action to move beyond the interim constitution, suggesting the appointment of a dedicated team for this purpose.
Regarding regional issues, the President mentioned the electoral processes in Somaliland and the political situation in Puntland. He urged for expedited actions in Somaliland and advocated for peaceful dialogue in Puntland to avoid instability.
On the international stage, President Mohamud appealed for debt forgiveness and the removal of Somalia from Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, emphasising the need for full international cooperation in these matters.
Overall, President Mohamud’s address to the Parliament was a call to action, focusing on national unity, security improvements, and political stability. His speech sets a tone of urgency and determination for the current Parliament’s session.
