(29-11-23) MOGADISHU – Abdiweli Nur Halane, a local engineer, has introduced an innovative cooker that operates on used car oil, in a significant step towards combating desertification in Somalia. This initiative, developed in Adaado town, Galguduud region, aims to curb the extensive use of charcoal, a primary driver of deforestation and desertification in the region.
Halane’s creation, the ‘Badbaadi Geed’ (Save a Tree) cooker, utilises readily available materials in Somalia. In an interview with Universal TV, Halane expressed his commitment to environmental conservation, saying, “I have manufactured this cooker to end the reliance on charcoal. It is safe to use at home.” He also demonstrated the functionality of his invention, underscoring its safety and efficiency.
The reliance on charcoal as a fuel source has long been a concern in Somalia, contributing to severe environmental degradation. Halane’s alternative solution offers a sustainable and practical approach to address this issue.
The cooker has garnered significant interest from the local populace, with many placing orders at Halane’s workshop. Despite the challenge of meeting this increasing demand, the response from those who have purchased the cooker has been positive, with no reported safety issues. A woman intending to buy the cooker stated, “People who have used it told me that it cooks fast. Now I am ready to buy it.”
Halane’s innovation represents a technological breakthrough and a beacon of hope for environmental sustainability in Somalia. As his workshop in the Adaado town of Galmudug State rises to the challenge of fulfilling orders, there is growing optimism about the role his invention could play in mitigating desertification and fostering a greener future for the region.
