(30-12-23) GAROWE (Halqabsi News) — Over 30 traditional elders from Puntland have backed the SSC-Khatumo’s decision to abstain from the selection process for the upcoming Puntland parliamentarians. The endorsement came at a meeting in Garowe, chaired by King Burhan King Muse.
The conference, held last Friday, concluded with a consensus to form a 49-member parliament in the forthcoming election. A key issue for subsequent discussion is the allocation of seats vacated by SSC-Khatumo lawmakers.
The elders also called for members of SSC-Khatumo, part of the committee for dispute resolution and parliament member approval, to resign. This move underscores the contention that SSC-Khatumo’s exclusion from the election process invalidates their participation in these committees.
This development follows statements from the incumbent regional President, Deni, asserting that the 17 parliamentary seats for the SSC region would not be overlooked. However, opposition candidates have accused President Deni of planning to personally appoint individuals to these seats, raising concerns about the fairness of the process.
