(06-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Protests have erupted in Burao, the capital of Somalia’s Togdheer region, following a contentious port deal between the Ethiopian government and the self-declared independent region of Somaliland on Monday. Demonstrators in Burao, a city under Somaliland control, expressed their vehement opposition on Saturday, emphasising that Somalia’s land and sea resources are not for sale.

The deal, signed in Addis Ababa by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, would allow Ethiopia to establish commercial marine operations and access to a military base on the Red Sea. This agreement has been met with widespread criticism across Somalia, particularly regarding concerns over national sovereignty.

Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, has also witnessed significant protests since last Monday. Protesters there have been vocal, with chants of “Death or victory” and “Somalia belongs to Somalis,” highlighting the strong opposition to what is perceived as Ethiopia’s infringement on Somali sovereignty.

Redwan Hussien, Abiy’s National Security adviser, stated in a recent interview that Ethiopia will recognise Somaliland following the completion of the port agreement. However, Somaliland authorities have indicated that the agreement will be implemented upon Ethiopia’s formal recognition.

The Somali government has denounced the agreement, describing it as “an act of aggression against Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” The government has pledged to defend the nation’s maritime resources against any perceived threats.
