(13-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari, the former Speaker of the Somali Parliament, has demanded the immediate issuance of an arrest warrant for Muse Bihi Abdi, President of Somaliland, citing charges of treason. This call follows a controversial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in which Somaliland allegedly ceded 20 kilometres of sea territory for an Ethiopian naval military base.

Jawari, expressing strong condemnation, argued that Muse Bihi’s own admission to the agreement is conclusive proof of the offence. He stated that this act blatantly violates Somalia’s sovereignty, obviating the need for additional witness testimonies.

The former Speaker expressed criticism over the lack of legal measures taken against this purportedly illicit agreement, which has garnered widespread domestic and international condemnation. He praised the swift response of the Somali Parliament and Government in protesting against the agreement, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.

A critical aspect of this situation is its geopolitical ramifications. According to Jawari and other analysts, Ethiopia’s potential formal recognition of Somaliland’s independence could significantly strain the already tense relations between Ethiopia and Somalia, historically marked by military conflict and mutual distrust.

The international community, encompassing Somali politicians and various foreign entities, has raised concerns about Ethiopia’s involvement in the agreement. They caution the Ethiopian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, against any actions that might violate international laws and destabilize the already volatile Horn of Africa region.
