(14-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Court of Appeal in Banadir region began hearing appeals from officials convicted of corruption. This follows last year’s convictions by the Banadir Regional Court, where five Treasury and Central Bank of Somalia (CBS) officials were sentenced to one to nine years for corruption-related offences.
Sunday’s appeal hearings involve these same officials, who are contesting the initial verdicts, seeking either acquittal or reduced sentences. The appeal process is a key development in Somalia’s efforts to enforce accountability within its financial sectors.
These proceedings are unfolding against the backdrop of a broader scandal. Last year, the National Audit Office accused several government officials of misappropriating more than 20 million dollars, a revelation that has rocked the country.
