(14-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hamsa Abdi Barre, made a resolute speech on Sunday at the 25th-anniversary celebration of the FPENS education umbrella, emphasising the Danish government’s commitment to fostering educational development in Somalia. The Prime Minister’s address, however, swiftly pivoted to a more contentious subject – the longstanding territorial ambitions of Ethiopia towards Somali land and sea.

PM Hamsa specifically cited concerns about the Oromo ethnic group and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, accusing them of harbouring a longstanding desire to annex Somali territory. His remarks were stark and unyielding: “…Songs and threats cannot be accepted in the land of Somalis, and those who do so will be preceded by blood and clots, and they will leave carrying dead bodies and nothing alive.” This emphatic statement underlines the Somali government’s firm stance on defending its territorial integrity against any foreign incursion.

In a call to unity, Prime Minister Hamsa urged the Somali population in the northern regions of Somaliland to actively participate in the defense of their country. He lauded them for their bravery, truthfulness, patriotism, and ‘Somaliness’, particularly in light of their protests against Ethiopian aspirations. This appeal for national solidarity reflects the Prime Minister’s strategic approach to countering external threats while fostering a sense of national identity and purpose.

The Prime Minister’s speech at the FPENS anniversary was a poignant reminder of the complex geopolitical challenges Somalia faces. As the country continues to navigate these issues, the government’s commitment to education and national defence remains a central theme in its policy-making and diplomatic efforts.
