(10-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Federal Parliament of Somalia on Saturday officially ratified the agreement for the country’s membership in the East African Community (EAC). The People’s Assembly witnessed a robust endorsement of the membership, with 148 members voting in favour, one against, and one abstention, illustrating the overwhelming support for Somalia’s integration into the regional bloc.
This parliamentary approval culminates years of diplomatic efforts by the Somali government, aimed at securing a place within the EAC, an organisation that encompasses nations such as DR Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, and now Somalia. The move is poised to open new economic horizons for Somalia, providing its businesses and citizens with invaluable opportunities for trade and market expansion across the East African region.
Somalia’s formal admission into the EAC was celebrated in December of the previous year, in a ceremony attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, signalling the dawn of a new chapter in Somalia’s regional engagement. The accession to the EAC is expected to foster economic growth, enhance stability, and promote shared prosperity among the member states.
The decision by the Somali Federal Parliament paves the way for the country to tap into the vast economic potential offered by the EAC’s integrated market. It represents a significant milestone for Somalia’s economic ambitions, facilitating easier access to larger markets, enhancing trade, and fostering economic collaboration within the East African region.
