(03-03-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has officially signed a new law addressing the rights and protections of refugees and asylum seekers in Somalia, the Ministry of Interior confirmed on Sunday.
This legislative move represents an advancement in Somalia’s commitment to human rights and aligns with international standards for treating displaced individuals. The law, passed by the People’s Assembly on 13 September 2023 and ratified by the Upper House on 16 January 2024, underlines the country’s dedication to providing sanctuary and support to those fleeing conflict and persecution.
The Ministry of Interior, which announced the enactment, described the law as a critical framework for ensuring the safety and well-being of refugees and asylum seekers within Somalia’s borders. It delineates the responsibilities of various governmental and non-governmental bodies’ responsibilities in upholding these vulnerable populations’ rights.
The newly signed legislation is part of a broader effort by the Somali government to enhance its legal and institutional frameworks amid ongoing challenges and is the second major piece of legislation signed by President Mohamud in two weeks.
