(12 April 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Fierce fighting broke out in Barawe, Lower Shabelle region, leading to the death of three soldiers and injuries among civilians, officials said Friday. The conflict erupted over a dispute involving the trade of Miraa, a local stimulant, which saw forces from the South-West Dervishes clash with the national army. The altercation reportedly started after South-West Dervish soldiers targeted women traders, prompting a swift response from national troops.
This marks the second major encounter between the two groups in the city, with both forces stationed nearby, the Dervishes at the South-West presidential headquarters and the federal troops throughout the city.
As tensions continue to simmer into the night, the situation in Barawe remains tense. Despite the presence of ATMIS troops, no intervention has been reported. The local community faces uncertainty, with the potential for further violence.
