(15 April 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Omar Mohamed, also known as Abu Ayan, who has renounced his association with Al-Shabaab, has revealed that the group deceives young recruits and allegedly administers drugs to numb their senses and instil fearlessness.
In an interview with state media, Abu Ayan disclosed that Al-Shabaab’s use of substances aimed at dulling the militants’ senses, thus preventing them from reasoning and understanding the true nature of their actions.
He went on to criticise the group for using false pretences, unconnected to the Islamic religion, to lure the youth, subsequently using drugs to manipulate their memories and cognition.
He condemned the terrorist acts enacted by the group as un-Islamic, highlighting their betrayal of the religion by killing Muslims. Urging misled youth to abandon the group, Abu Ayan criticised the group for their disobedience to God and for misinterpreting the Islamic religion. His change of heart came after recognising the damage inflicted on the Somali population and his revulsion at the militant leaders’ egregious actions.
