(07-06-24) KISMAYO (Halqabsi News) – Sheikh Adan Madobe, the Speaker of the Somali Federal Parliament, chaired a meeting of the Standing Committee in Kismayo, the capital of Jubbaland state.
The meeting focused on the agenda for the fifth session of the House of the People, which is scheduled to open in July. The Speaker urged committee members to engage in productive discussions on the agenda items, which include key legislation such as the electoral law, the establishment of an electoral commission, and a law on political parties.
According to sources, the Somali government, with the support of the parliamentary leadership, plans to push these laws through parliament when the fifth session opens. However, some MPs have expressed reservations and concerns about the government’s agenda, and it remains to be seen whether the government’s plans will succeed.
This development comes amid growing tensions between the government and some members of parliament, who have accused the government of failing to deliver on its promises. The government has previously been accused of pushing through controversial legislation without adequate consultation with parliament, and it is unclear whether it will be able to secure the necessary support for its latest legislative agenda.
