(24-06-24) BAIDOA (Halqabsi News) – An Al-Shabaab militant, Issack Sheikh Ali Abdullahi, has surrendered to the Somali National Army in the South West State. Mr Abdullahi, who served in the militant group for over 14 years, primarily in the Bay and Bakol regions, handed himself over to the SNA’s 60th Division after contacting them about his defection.
Upon his surrender, Mr Abdullahi expressed gratitude for the welcome he received from government forces and urged his former comrades to abandon the militant group and reintegrate into society.
This defection marks a growing trend of Al-Shabaab members surrendering to authorities, potentially signalling a weakening of the group’s grip in certain areas. The Somali government has offered amnesty to those who renounce violence and surrender.
