(25-06-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Somali Defence Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur and newly appointed US Ambassador to Somalia Richard H. Riley held a productive meeting focused on strengthening security cooperation.
The discussions centred on three key areas: intensified efforts to combat Al-Shabaab, support for the ongoing drawdown of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), and institutional capacity building for the Somali National Army (SNA).
Both Minister Nur and Ambassador Riley expressed their commitment to defeating Al-Shabaab and enhancing Somalia’s security capabilities. They emphasised the importance of strong defence institutions in achieving sustainable improvements to national security.
Ambassador Riley, who presented his credentials to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud last week, reiterated the United States’ dedication to supporting Somalia’s security efforts. This meeting signals a renewed focus on collaboration between Somalia and the U.S. in addressing the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab.
