(06-07-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The Somali National Army launched an offensive against Al-Shabaab militants between the towns of Balad and Jowhar in the Middle Shabelle region today. The operation comes as the SNA takes over security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Residents reported heavy fighting in the vicinity, with the army aiming to secure the strategic road linking the capital Mogadishu to the HirShabelle state capital Jowhar. The route has been subject to frequent Al-Shabaab attacks, disrupting travel and commerce.
SNA commanders have stated their intention to clear the militants from the area and reopen the road to ensure safe passage for civilians and goods. The operation is seen as a crucial test for the SNA, which is increasingly taking on a leading role in the fight against Al-Shabaab.
The situation in Balad town remains tense as government forces advance, raising concerns about potential civilian displacement. The outcome of this operation will have significant implications for the ongoing conflict in Central Shabelle, where the Somali government initiated its first phase of anti-terror operations in 2022.
