(13-07-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – A violent clash within Mogadishu’s Hamar Central Prison has left five convicted Al-Shabaab inmates dead. The confrontation involved gunfire and grenade explosions, raising serious concerns about how prisoners obtained weapons within the high-security facility.
The altercation began when Al-Shabaab members housed in the Biya Mundo section of the prison launched an attack against prison guards. Gunfire and explosions echoed through the prison complex, creating a chaotic scene.
Reports indicate that some inmates managed to acquire AK-47 rifles and explosive devices, leading to a fierce battle with prison security personnel. Security forces eventually neutralized all five attackers. These inmates had previously been sentenced to death for their involvement in Al-Shabaab activities and various murders.
Two additional prisoners were killed in the conflict, and two others were injured. Authorities have stabilized the situation and are conducting a thorough security operation within the prison to mitigate any further threats.
This incident is the second significant disturbance at Hamar Central Prison, following a similar event in 2020 when inmates clashed with concealed weapons. The recent violence highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Somali authorities in managing and securing high-risk prisoners linked to terrorist activities.
