(05 Aug 2024) GALKAYO (Halqabsi News) – Four Al-Shabaab convicts, who were awaiting execution, escaped from the Galkayo airbase prison last night, triggering a major manhunt by Puntland security forces.
Twelve inmates attempted to escape, but eight were quickly apprehended. The remaining four, all convicted Al-Shabaab members sentenced to death three years ago, remain at large.
MP Abdiladhif Muse Nur Sanyare, former governor of Mudug region, expressed deep concern over the escape and called for immediate action to apprehend both the fugitives and those who aided their escape.
The escaped convicts have claimed responsibility for numerous killings in Galkayo, targeting government officials and civilians alike.
Puntland authorities are investigating the security breach, with suspicions of internal collusion. This incident highlights serious concerns about the effectiveness of Somalia’s prison systems, following previous breakouts in Mogadishu and Bosaso.
