(15 Aug 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Hassan Aweer Ali Matan, a senior Al-Shabaab leader responsible for numerous attacks and abductions in central Somalia, has died from a long-term heart condition, intelligence officials confirmed to Halqabsi News. The leader, known in the central regions of Somalia, particularly in Mudug and Galgaduud, succumbed to his illness last night.
Hassan Aweer, hailing from the Saleeban tribe of Habargidir, was a notorious figure in his home district of Adado, Galgaduud. Matan was responsible for various acts of violence and intimidation, including setting traps to kill individuals suspected of collaborating with the government. As the leader of the group, he was also responsible for the abduction of Salebaan tribe elders, who were later handed over to the government, tried, and sentenced to prison.
According to sources, Hassan Aweer had been secretly taken to Hargeisa for medical treatment in the past and later transferred to Jilib in the Middle Jubba region. His death marks the end of a controversial and feared presence in central Somalia, with many locals expressing relief at the news of his passing.
