(16 Sep 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Somalia has concluded a two-year Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness Project, enhancing its capacity to secure climate finance for critical environmental initiatives. Launched in November 2021, the programme focused on strengthening the institutional capabilities of the Federal Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to access and manage GCF funds. Key outcomes include the development of operational procedures, resource mobilisation strategies, and Somalia’s first GCF Country Programme, which outlines priority climate resilience projects.
The GCF Country Programme identifies several projects to mitigate climate change impacts, including flood and drought management, renewable energy expansion, and ecosystem adaptation. These initiatives target vital sectors such as agriculture, livestock, and water management, which are particularly vulnerable to the increasing climate threats Somalia faces. The programme aligns with Somalia’s broader goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.
Somalia’s climate challenges, including rising temperatures, recurrent droughts, and devastating floods, have intensified over the years, severely impacting livelihoods and infrastructure. The readiness project has positioned Somalia to proactively address these threats, focusing on long-term climate resilience and sustainable development.
Somalia has established a crucial foundation for future climate financing efforts by completing this readiness project. The successful implementation marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards achieving a low-carbon, climate-resilient future, with continued support from global partners such as the Global Water Partnership.
