(29 Sep 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, addressed the 79th United Nations General Assembly, highlighting the country’s achievements in combating terrorism and driving economic recovery. Barre pointed to significant gains against the militant group Al-Shabaab, with Somali national security forces reclaiming large areas of territory. He emphasised that Somalia’s efforts to dismantle the group’s operational and financial networks have been crucial in restoring peace and stability.
The Prime Minister stressed the need for continued international support, particularly through the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). He called on the global community to ensure sustained funding for peacekeeping missions, linking security improvements to broader governance reforms that are essential for long-term peace in the country.
On the economic front, Barre celebrated Somalia’s completion of the debt relief process, which would enable it to re-enter the global financial system. He highlighted the country’s untapped resources, including its potential in agriculture, renewable energy, and marine industries, urging international investment to help Somalia achieve economic prosperity.
Barre concluded by reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to contributing to global peace and security, particularly through its upcoming role on the UN Security Council. He called for stronger multilateral cooperation to address pressing global challenges, emphasising Somalia’s readiness to play a key role on the international stage.
