(19 Oct 2024) KISMAYO (Halqabsi News) – Despite recent security improvements, a grenade explosion rocked the coastal city of Kismayo last night, leaving six civilians injured. The attack occurred at a restaurant located at the Golol intersection, where a group of people had gathered for a party. According to eyewitnesses, unidentified assailants threw the grenade into the crowded venue before fleeing the scene.
The injured victims were quickly transported to nearby medical centres, where they are currently receiving treatment. Of the six injured, three are reported to be in critical condition. Local authorities have not yet made any arrests, despite a swift response and initial investigation by Jubbaland security forces.
“We are working tirelessly to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice,” Col. Ahmed Mohamed a Jubbaland security official told Halqabsi News. “Security forces have increased patrols and surveillance in key areas of the city following the attack.”
Kismayo, the capital of Jubbaland state, had experienced relative calm in recent months. However, security efforts have been ramped up as part of ongoing operations aimed at combating the Al-Shabaab militant group, which remains active in the Lower Jubba region.
Government forces and Jubbaland’s Dervish forces have been intensifying their crackdown on Al-Shabaab in the region. Despite these efforts, last night’s attack highlights the ongoing challenges in securing the area.
