(24 Oct 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Elite Danab forces of the Somali National Army (SNA) have killed 12 Al-Shabaab fighters and wounded 22 others in a major operation in the Galgaduud region. The raid occurred in the forested area of Gerile, east of the Eeldheer district.
According to a statement from the Somali government, the operation was part of a broader campaign aimed at eliminating remnants of the militant group from the region. The Danab commandos targeted insurgents hiding in the dense forest, resulting in significant casualties.
“Danab SNA commando forces killed 12 conspirators from Khawarij while 22 others were injured in the operation around Gerile,” the government’s press release stated. The operation reportedly went as planned, with the insurgents being tracked and confronted in their hideout.
The region has seen heightened military activity in recent months as Somali government forces, with support from local militias known as Mawisleyda, continue to push back against Al-Shabaab. The ongoing offensive in central Somalia aims to weaken the group’s hold on rural areas.
While the Somali government has hailed the success of the operation, there has been no immediate response from Al-Shabaab regarding the losses. The situation in the area remains tense as government forces maintain their presence to secure the region from further attacks.
