(31 Oct 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The 5th Conference on Leadership and Creativity of Somali Youth concluded in Mogadishu, with US Ambassador to Somalia, Richard H. Riley, delivering a powerful virtual address that underscored the importance of youth in shaping the future of the nation. The two-day event gathered young leaders from the capital and various regions of Somalia.
In his remarks, Ambassador Riley emphasised the critical role that Somali youth play in the development of the country. “Young people are the backbone of any nation. Your potential as youth is limitless, and your contribution to Somalia’s progress is invaluable,” he stated. He urged the participants to recognise their power to effect change, adding, “The choices you make today will help shape the destiny of this great nation.”
The ambassador also highlighted the US government’s commitment to empowering Somali youth through various initiatives, including the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), the Mandela Washington Fellowship, and the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). These programmes aim to provide young leaders with the skills and opportunities necessary to drive positive change in their communities.
Ambassador Riley’s address came as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud closed the conference, commending the youth for their contributions to the nation and reaffirming the government’s commitment to holding direct elections in mid-2025.
