(02 Dec 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has issued a decree renaming the former General Gordon military base in Mogadishu to honour Colonel Mohammed Mubarak Al Mansori, a senior Emirati military officer who was killed in February this year by Al-Shabaab attack in the capital, which also claimed the lives of three other Emirati soldiers and a Bahranian military officer.
The decision comes as President Mohamud prepares for an official visit to the Gulf nation in the coming nations. The renaming of the base is seen as a symbolic gesture recognising the UAE’s support for Somalia’s stability and development.
Colonel Al Mansori, who played a significant role in the UAE’s military support to SNA, was targeted in a deadly attack inside a military camp claimed by Al-Shabaab. The renaming highlights the federal government’s efforts to commemorate allies who have contributed to the country’s fight against extremism.
The decree, signed on 2 September, takes effect immediately and will be published in the government’s official gazette.
