(18 Dec 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has announced that Mogadishu will host the country’s first one-person, one-vote elections as part of his administration’s push for universal suffrage elections. Speaking at the handover ceremony for the Banadir Regional Administration (BRA) Governor and Mogadishu Mayor, Mohamud Ahmed Amir, Prime Minister Barre said that the new governor would be the last to take the position through presidential appointment.
“We are determined to return leadership to the people, allowing Mogadishu residents to elect their representatives. I hope Amir’s appointment will be the last of its kind,” Prime Minister Barre said during the ceremony.
He urged the new mayor to lead with integrity and transparency while prioritising efforts to enhance security, cleanliness, public services, and the city’s overall appearance. Barre also thanked the outgoing governor, Yusuf Hussein Jimale ‘Maddale’, for his contributions to Mogadishu’s security and development during his tenure.
