(01-Feb-23) Mogadishu, Somalia – On Thursday afternoon, several mortars landed in various areas of Mogadishu, causing significant damage and casualties. Reports indicate that two mortars struck a funeral home in the Shibis district, killing two people and injuring eight others, including woman and a pregnant girl. The injured individuals were transported to medical centers in Mogadishu for treatment.
In addition, another mortar landed on a civilian house in the Jubba intersection, injuring multiple civilians. Other mortars hit neighborhoods near the Somali Presidency, but the extent of the damage is not yet known.
These incidents are the latest in a series of planned killings and clashes between government forces and armed groups in the Shibis and Bondhere districts. The escalating violence has caused considerable harm to civilians and underscores the deteriorating security situation in Mogadishu.
The government has not yet released a statement on the attacks, but the public’s growing concern over the ability of security forces to protect citizens is palpable. The people of Mogadishu are demanding swift action to restore security and bring the perpetrators to justice.
