(19-05-23) MOGADISHU – The Ministry of Education, Culture & Higher Education of the Federal Republic of Somalia has pledged its commitment to the continued education of Somali students fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan. This statement was delivered by the Director of the Ministry, Ismail Yusuf Osman, in an address to state media on Thursday evening.
Approximately 1,270 students have already arrived in the capital city of Mogadishu, with an additional 300 having found refuge in other regions of the country. The Ministry of Education is actively assisting in their placement.
Ismail Yusuf Osman further pointed out, “These students have shown resilience and courage, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they are given the opportunity to continue their studies.”
The handling of these students is currently under the jurisdiction of a committee appointed by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. In cooperation with the Sudanese Embassy in Somalia, the committee is working on verifying the records of students registered in Sudanese universities.
“This is not a matter we take lightly,” stated Prime Minister Barre. “These young individuals represent the future of Somalia, and we owe it to them to ensure they have every chance of fulfilling their potential. We are grateful for the cooperation of the Sudanese Embassy, which is integral to our efforts.”
This multi-faceted approach to the situation demonstrates the Somali government’s firm commitment to education as a fundamental right, regardless of circumstances. It remains hopeful that this measure will provide some relief to the students affected by the conflict in Sudan.
