(23-05-23) MOGADISHU – The closing day of the 2023 Somalia Mayors Forum on Tuesday saw key figures come together to commit to changes in governance and address urgent crises impacting Somalia. The forum concluded with a stirring call to action.
Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, alongside other Ministers from Federal Member States (FMS), emphasised the importance of strengthening local governments. Before the next forum, they pledged to push for a transformation towards democratically elected mayors, who are true reflections of their communities, replacing the current system of appointed officials.
Also, present at the forum were representatives from the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), who provided insight into their operations. They highlighted how the system will be delivered to local governments to register ten million people across Somalia by 2026, fostering a more efficient, accountable system of governance.
Adding to the robust agenda was the situation in Beletweyne, a topic that took centre stage during Minister Fiqi’s closing remarks. Recurring environmental disasters have battered the city and the government is actively seeking permanent solutions.
Recent flooding in Beletweyne has displaced 90% of the city’s inhabitants, an unprecedented disaster since 1981. Urging immediate assistance, Minister Fiqi said, “The scale of this disaster necessitates the cooperation of the Somali people and various aid agencies. The people of Beletweyne need our support.”
But it wasn’t all about disaster response. The Minister ended the forum with a determined call to action against the extremist elements within the country. Specifically, he focused on Alshabab, announcing the imminent launch of the second phase against Alshabab code-named “Black Lion” operation.
“With the spirit of the Black Lion, we will stand firm, and Alshabab will face the wrath of our resolve. This operation will usher in a new phase in our fight against extremism, and we must stand united in this battle for our nation’s future,” Fiqi declared.
The forum, attended by international partners, local governance experts, and nineteen mayors from across Somalia, showed a resolute commitment to tackling the pressing issues facing the country today.
