(06-06-23) MOGADISHU — The Deputy Speaker of the House of the People, Mr. Abdullahi Abshir, has issued a stern warning to federal legislators who miss crucial parliamentary sessions without justification, noting that such behaviour should result in salary cuts as a disciplinary measure.
Abshir underscored that both attending and non-attending MPs should be held to equal standards. His remarks came in the wake of Monday’s failed opening of a parliamentary session due to a lack of quorum.
In an effort to uphold accountability, the Parliament Secretariat publicly listed the names of MPs who attended the meeting, along with those absent without proper circumstances.
Expressing discontent with the lack of commitment, the Deputy Speaker underlined that unexcused absences, especially following a long recess, will not be tolerated. He highlighted the importance of regular attendance given the plethora of legislation awaiting MPs’ review and passage, which is essential to strengthening the country’s legislative framework.
