(21-06-23) WASHINGTON — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia met with Brian Nelson, the Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The high-level meeting, held in Washington, D.C., entailed a comprehensive discussion on several key issues, including public finance management, debt relief, and the ongoing struggle against extremist organisations in Somalia.
The discussion emphasised the threat posed by the militant group Al-Shabaab in Somalia and beyond. Recognising the need for effective counterterrorism strategies, they explored potential avenues for cooperation and knowledge exchange.
In addition to security concerns, the talks focused on financial matters of mutual concern. Public finance management was a significant point of discussion, reflecting both parties’ dedication to enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the use of public resources. The leaders also tackled the contentious issue of debt relief for Somalia, a topic of ongoing concern in international economic circles.
