(21-06-23) WASHINGTON —  President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, leading a high-ranking delegation, landed on Tuesday in Washington DC, USA, on a mission to secure global support in the battle against Al-Shabaab terrorists at a United Nations Security Council session.

In an anticipated speech on Wednesday at the UN Security Council, President Mohamud is expected to shed light on the security situation back home, emphasising the necessity to lift the arms embargo on Somalia. His address will focus on securing extensive international assistance in the second phase of the country’s war against Al-Shabaab terrorists.

In addition to his UN commitments, President Mohamud and his delegation are scheduled to have discussions with US officials and heads of international organisations. The aim is to rally international support for the Somali government’s efforts to stabilise regions liberated from terrorist control and bolster social service provision.

Simultaneously, amidst the urgency of international diplomacy, President Mohamud expressed his condolences to the victims who tragically lost their lives in Tuesday’s conflict in the city of Garowe, the capital of Puntland state of Somalia. At last 27 people were killed including 10 civilians in a fight between Puntland government army & militia forces loyal to opposition politicians.

The President urged for peace, highlighting that the Somali people cannot endure additional conflicts in areas generally considered peaceful and stable, especially while the government is wrestling with terrorism and attempting to restore peace in regions previously marred by civil wars.

Reiterating his appeal for understanding and peace, President Mohamud urged the traditional elders of Puntland to mediate and resolve the current predicament, emphasising their crucial role in maintaining governance and stability in Puntland. He assured that the Federal Government of Somalia stands ready to provide the necessary support to facilitate peace and conflict resolution in Puntland.

This visit underscores the Somali administration’s commitment to securing international backing in their war against terror, re-establishing stability in the country, and fostering a peaceful environment, undisturbed by unnecessary conflict.
