(27-06-23) MOGADISHU — The Somali Government announced that the country exported more than two million goats to Arab countries. The Minister of Animal Husbandry, Hassan Husien Eelaay, said that Bosaaso and Berbera ports served as hubs for livestock export from Somalia, as shown by the notable numbers that were reported from the ports.
He also added that the high jump in livestock exports is linked to the recovering commercial activities between The Somalia Government and Golf counties. Eelaay pointed out that the increase in the number of pilgrim visitors since the ending of Covid-19 restrictions played a major role in the rise of cattle exports.
While stating the continuation of livestock export activities in the major ports in Somalia, the minister said that more than one million cattle were exported to Saudi Arabia, which was specifically needed for Hajj visitors and to meet the high demand for cattle on the day of Arfo.
After a long halt, livestock exports to Saudi Arabia have been resumed. In March, the Government of Saudi Arabia lifted the livestock export ban from Somalia, helping the Somali economy, which heavily relies on livestock exports.
The livestock sector’s substantial contribution to the country’s economic growth and development, also this achievement, will reinforce Somalia’s position as one of the world’s leading livestock exporters.
