(17/07/23) Garowe – On Sunday night, opposition forces denied carrying out actions that might lead to new conflicts in Puntland’s capital city of Garowe. In a press conference, the head of the Danab of Puntland forces said that the spread of lies about a future conflict is forcing people to evacuate the city.
This declaration comes at time when concerns about a potential new conflict on the 20th of this month in Garowe are rising. The Puntland parliament is scheduled to review the constitution on Thursday.
So far, Puntland State and opposition leaders have failed to reach an agreement about the upcoming election. Dani, the president of Puntland, insists on opening the constitution; on the other hand, opposition leaders and former Puntland presidents have urged for an election to be held on January 8, 2024, and for the administration to refrain from modifying the constitution.
The Puntland communities expressed worry over the lack of consensus between the government and opposition leaders, despite continuous attempts to avoid a new conflict in Puntland.
