(29/08/23) MOGADISHU – Nur-deeq Abdullahi Maalingur, the leader of the extremist group in the southern Mudug region, surrendered on Tuesday to the combined forces of National Army and Galmudug State Darwish forces. The arrest of Nur-deeq took place near the outskirts of Bacadweyne, as confirmed by an official statement from the Ministry of Information.
Nur-deeq Abdullahi Maalingur was taken into custody by the Somali Army while he was travelling in a luxurious vehicle, bearing an AK-47 rifle. The Ministry of Information’s statement detailed that his arrest occurred on the fringes of Bacadweyne within the Mudug region.
Following his arrest, Nur-deeq was transported to the Wisil district in the Mudug region, a location frequented by high-ranking officials from both the federal government and the Galmudug State. Among those present were Ahmed Macalim Fiqi, the Minister of Internal Affairs of the federal government of Somalia.
Efforts to counter Al-Shabaab’s presence within Galmudug’s territories have gained momentum, with government forces and local communities successfully gaining control over strategic areas in Galguduud region. The upcoming second phase of the operation is expected to capitalize on these achievements, applying increased pressure on the extremist group in Jubaland and South West Federal Member States.
