(29-08-23) MOGADISHU — Somali MP, Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, has voiced serious concerns over alleged foreign governmental interference and support from certain Somali factions to the extremist group Al-Shabaab. In a Facebook post on Monday, he warned of international and local entities benefiting from the continuous strife.
Citing a grave concern, MP Warsame stated, “There are governments and groups that directly and indirectly support the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.” He went on to accuse these entities of profiting from terrorism, hinting at a larger international conspiracy against Somalia’s path to peace and stability.
Reflecting on the damages caused by the terrorist group, MP Warsame lamented, “This enemy killed thousands of Somalis in a day, targeted our sheikhs, teachers, doctors, officers, engineers, businessmen, politicians, journalists, heroes, and ambassadors, and colonised Somalis.”
Addressing some politicians’ attempts to gain mileage out of the ongoing conflict, the MP was stern in his rebuke, stating that anyone who underestimates the threat Al-Shabaab poses to the nation’s existence is a “fool.” He went further to criticize those using the situation for political leverage, calling them oblivious to the scale of the threat.
Reaffirming his allegiance and support, MP Warsame declared, “I stand by the President and the leaders of the war.” He lauded the relentless efforts and sacrifices of Somalia’s armed forces and local militias who are on the frontline against Al-Shabaab.
This robust declaration of support for President Hassan Sheikh and the nation’s defenders signals a strong and united front in the ongoing battle against extremism. Whether this will translate into a consolidated approach to peace remains to be seen
