(30-08-23) DHUSAMAREB — Following several days of low-level discussions, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and former Hiran Governor Ali Jayte Osman, brokered by Hawadale community chief Ugas Yusuf Ugas Hassan have reportedly reached an agreement to ease political tensions in the Hiran region, according to sources close to Villa Somalia.
The negotiations come in the wake of increasing unrest triggered by Ali Jayte’s rebellion after his removal from office in July. The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, said the agreement aims to restore stability in the Hiran capital of Beledweyne.
President Hassan Sheikh, who has been in Dhusamareb for a month overseeing military operations, is planning to move his base to Mahaas district in Hiiraan next week. Sources say the President intends to station his general command in Mahaas to monitor ongoing first-phase liberation operations in the HirShabelle and Galmudug regions.
The Somali government has been actively fighting against the Al-Shabaab extremist group, with both national and local forces achieving significant success. The first phase campaign, which is entering its second phase, is expected to extend its scope to the Southwest and Jubbaland regions and will include troops from neighbouring countries.
