(28-08-23) DHUSAMAREB — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia made a rousing speech on Sunday evening, making clear his intentions to eradicate the extremist group, Al-Shabaab. This comes amid a deadly attack by the group on the Somali National Army in Cawsweyne on Saturday. President Hassan has been in Dhusamareb since the beginning of August to lead the conclusion of the first phase of an offensive against Al-Shabaab.
Beginning with the evocative quote, “In the end, between the floor and the broom, the broom eventually wears out,” President Hassan symbolised Al-Shabaab as a force that is dwindling and nearing its end.
In his address, the President firmly committed to ensuring that no Somali in their homeland would be under the yoke of Al-Shabaab. “A Somali in his land will not be subjected to Al-Shabaab colonisation,” he stated emphatically.
Recognising the sacrifices of many Somalis, President Hassan said, “We praise the heroes of the nation and we pray for them.” He also appealed to Somali businessmen and property owners to stand by those who have suffered at the hands of Al-Shabaab.
In a stern warning, the President urged Somalis to distance themselves from traitors or spies. “Don’t bring him in because of tribe or relatives; you and others will not be safe from him,” he cautioned, pressing for such individuals to be handed to the government for rehabilitation.
Moreover, the President extended an offer of non-negotiable amnesty to young Al-Shabaab members. “Our misguided sons, the sun should not set on you. Come together and save your lives,” he pleaded. For older members or leaders, he reminded them that “repentance is still open.”
