(18-09-23) DHUSAMAREB — On Monday, in an extraordinary diplomatic gesture, the new EU Ambassador to Somalia, Karin Johansson, bypassed traditional protocol by presenting her credentials to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at the Galmudug Statehouse, rather than at the customary Villa Somalia in Mogadishu.
The ceremony marked an unprecedented shift, with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud noting its historic significance: “This is a historic moment that showcases the Federal Government of Somalia’s reach beyond the capital. Our duty is to serve the people of Somalia across all regions.”
This event unfolds against a backdrop of an increasing offensive by the Somali National Army (SNA) and their international allies in combating the extremist group al-Shabaab in the states of Galmudug and Hirshabelle.
“The EU-Somalia relationship has never been stronger. This event is a testament to that. Somalia can rely on the EU’s support in capacity-building and security enhancement, especially at this crucial juncture,” stated Ambassador Johansson.
Experts in international relations view the ceremony’s unique location as a signal of a heightened level of international commitment to Somalia. “This event could mark a reconfiguration of how international relations are conducted with the Federal Government,” said Dr. Mohamed Ismail, a Mogadishu-based political analyst.
The discussions between President Hassan Sheikh and Ambassador Johansson centred on augmenting EU’s support for Somalia, focusing primarily on the formidable challenge of eradicating al-Shabaab and bolstering Somalia’s security infrastructure.
