(07-09-23) MOGADISHU — Three senior Al-Shabaab leaders have been killed in a joint aerial operation in the Galgadud region, according to a press release from the federal government of Somalia on Thursday. Conducted in collaboration with local forces and international partners, the operation targeted areas on the outskirts of Ceel-La-Helay, now back under government control.
The deceased leaders, identified as Olol Ali Guled, Shuuke Ali Dheeg and Isse Barre, were high on the federal government’s list of wanted figures. Guled was noted as the top leader of Al-Shabaab in the region. “The operation, professionally planned and executed, has broken the back of the Khawarij in general, particularly those hiding in Galmudug,” the government’s statement read.
Local residents received thanks from the government for their role in facilitating the operation. The press release pledged continued actions against Al-Shabaab in the Galmudug area, stating, “Liberation operations are currently underway with the cooperation of government forces and locals.”
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who is leading liberation operations in Galmudug and Hirshabelle, is in Aadan Yabaal district on the front lines. The government reinforced its dedication to the ongoing fight, affirming, “We remain committed to protecting Somalia from threats & encourage the public to reject extremist ideologies.”
