(04-09-23) MOGADISHU — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Government of Somalia arrived in the Mahaas district of the Hiraan region on Sunday. The visit comes after a month’s stay in the capital of the Somali state of Galmudug.
Mahaas has been a focal point in the ongoing war against the extremist group, Al-Shabaab. What initially began as civil unrest has evolved into a fully-fledged battle, involving various stakeholders at the federal and state levels.
On Sunday evening, the President held meetings with key political figures in the region, discussing strategies for fortifying operations against Al-Shabaab. Among the attendees were politicians from both federal and state governments.
It’s worth noting that the Hiraan region, once at the forefront of the struggle against Al-Shabaab, has lately been absent from the conflict. This absence has led to internal strife, as well as worries concerning the distribution of power between the Hiraan Shabelle and the central government.
President Mohamud is expected to stay in Mahaas for a few days, with plans to organise a Shabab uprising that will act as a support and shield for the army in their ongoing war against Al-Shabaab. The visit aims to expedite military actions against the Islamist militant group al-Shabab, particularly in the Hirshabelle and Galmudug States.
