(11-09-23) MOGADISHU — Officials announced on Monday that the Somali National Army, supported by armed local civilians, has regained control of El Garas, a town in the Galgaduud region previously held by Al-Shabaab militants.
The town, located 63 km southeast of Dhusamareb, was a long-standing stronghold for the extremist group. State-run media reports indicate that forces are currently undertaking a “clearing operation” to rid the area of any lingering insurgents.
“The Somali National Army, supported by local forces, regains full control of El Garas in Galgudud, formerly a Khawarij stronghold. Cleanup ops underway,” stated the Ministry of Defence. “The Khawarij fighters fled when encircled by our troops. This marks a significant victory in our war against terrorism.”
The government noted that Al-Shabaab forces had vacated the town prior to the army’s arrival, facilitating the recapture operation. Al-Shabaab has not yet issued a statement regarding the loss of the town.
In the backdrop of intensified ground and air offensives against Al-Shabaab by the Somali National Army, local allies, and international partners, the government appears to be reclaiming territories in Galmudug and Hirshabelle states. The immediate focus now pivots to stabilising El Garas and other reclaimed areas from Alshabaab.
